5th March, 2016, New Delhi: A tough end to U Mumba’s campaign as they lose out in the final minutes, losing the title 28-31 to eventual champions Patna Pirates.
The first half saw a tentative start from both teams but the tempo increased with U Mumba suffering an all-out in the 7th minute when Rohit Kumar managed to touch both of the U Mumba corners. The situation nearly related itself a few minutes later but Surender Nada coming in for Fazel Atrachali staved off the all out with a brilliant super tackle. Shabeer Bapu was also brought on in place of Fazel and quickly provided impetus to the game. Captain Anup Kumar took charge of raiding and came back with 2 points with half time approaching. U Mumba went into half time trailing 11-19 to Patna.
An inspired U Mumba took the mat in the second half and quickly got the opposition down to the last man. Gurwinder Singh was the last man remaining and attempted to hold off the all out but smart thinking from Jeeva Kumar and Vishal Mane saw the all out inflicted on the Patna Pirates in the 30th minute, taking the score to 20-24. Anup and Shabeer kept scoring in their raids and when Rajesh Mondal stepped out of the mat, the situation became tight. A quick raid from Anup levelled the scores at 28 all with 90 seconds remaining on the clock. But Patna substitute Deepak Narwal sneaked through the U Mumba defence and sealed their fate. The final whistle blew and U Mumba ultimately lost the title 28-31 to Patna Pirates.
Captain Anup Kumar was reserved in his manner as usual. "Our defence lost a little in the beginning and if we were tighter in the beginning, we could have won. Patna were a good team and are deservedly champions."
Rishank Devadiga, judged the ‘Best Raider’ of the tournament, agreed with his captain about the lack of defensive cohesiveness that cost them a good start. "I played well individually but ultimately it's a team game and we lost today. It wasn't our day today and we will come back stronger in the next season"
